A new U.S. air defense base in northern Poland, designed to detect and intercept ballistic missile attacks as part of a broader NATO missile shield, is mission ready, the western military alliance announced on Wednesday.

Poland's defence ministry has signed a contract for 58 Rosomak (Wolverine) armoured personnel carriers equipped with advanced, remotely-operated turrets, News.Az reports citing TVP World.

The new Rosomaks will join some 800 vehicles of this type already in the service of the Polish army.

The deal, valued at approximately 2.6 billion złoty (€610 million), was sealed in Warsaw on Monday by the country’s Armament Agency and a consortium of Polish companies: Huta Stalowa Wola, PGZ, Rosomak, and WB Electronics.

It is “likely” that Russia was involved in the fire that recently destroyed Warsaw’s largest shopping centre, says Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. However, he added that investigations are still ongoing.

At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, at which he was discussing the formation of a new commission to investigate Russian influence in Poland, Tusk said Russian operatives could have been involved in the fire that earlier this month destroyed the Marywilska 44 shopping centre.

Poland plans to invest 10 billion zlotys ($2.55 billion) in strengthening its borders with Russia and Belarus to deter potential aggression, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on May 18, according to Bloomberg.
