An Iraqi security source told CNN on Saturday (local time) that a "huge explosion" took place at a military base belonging to Iraq's Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Babylon Governorate south of Baghdad.

The explosions took place at an ammunition depot at a PMF military base, the source said, but didn't provide further details or elaborate on a cause.

Following explosion at #PMF base south of Baghdad, US official confirms to me no US military activity in the area. A senior Iraqi official tells me the explosion is believed to have been caused by an Israeli airstrike, but there’s no confirmation, and Baghdad will investigate.
